Over the years, clear aligner therapy such as Invisalign has gained some serious attention. How do you know if you should believe the hype about Invisalign? Dr. Jared Lee is here to help you learn the facts and fiction about Invisalign clear aligners!

Fiction: Braces work better than Invisalign

It’s common to assume that Invisalign clear aligners aren’t as effective as braces since they’re removable rather than fixed to the teeth. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth! This is undoubtedly a myth worth busting.

Fact: Invisalign is just as effective as metal braces

Thanks to advances in technology, clear aligners have come a long way. Initially, orthodontists used them for post-treatment retention. Still, now Invisalign trays are just as effective at correcting a wide range of orthodontic problems. You can achieve the same stunning results as you would with braces when used as directed by Dr. Jared Lee

Fiction: Invisalign treatment takes longer than metal braces

It is a misconception that traditional braces can straighten teeth more quickly than Invisalign since they are attached to the teeth with glue and wire. However, that’s not always the case when it comes to using Invisalign.

Fact: Treatment time is similar for both Invisalign and metal braces

There is no one-size-fits-all answer regarding treatment time, as every case we see in our Oxnard and Santa Paula offices is unique. However, treatment with Invisalign is typically about the same amount of time – or even less– than traditional braces. Treatment with traditional braces lasts, on average, around two years. In comparison, the treatment with Invisalign is typically less than two years. The exact time spent wearing aligners will depend on a few factors, such as age, compliance, and the severity of orthodontic issues.

Fiction: Invisalign is more expensive than braces

Over the years, traditional braces have undergone many changes, making them more affordable and accessible. Since Invisalign is a newer technology, it is a common belief that it must cost more than traditional braces. Boy, do we have some good news!

Fact: Invisalign cost is comparable to braces

Invisalign clear aligners are often about the same cost as traditional metal braces. However, every patient’s orthodontic treatment is different, and there isn’t a firm number for how much treatment will cost. If you have dental insurance, your policy may also cover your treatment. Our teams in Oxnard or Santa Paula will verify any coverage before your treatment begins and work with you to create a treatment plan that fits your budget.

Fiction: Invisalign trays are painful

Many people believe that since metal braces have a reputation for being uncomfortable, Invisalign clear aligners will be as well. Traditional braces feature metal wires that are attached to your teeth and are gradually adjusted over time to straighten them, and this often causes discomfort. However, Invisalign clear aligners have proven to be not as uncomfortable as traditional braces.

Fact: Invisalign trays are very comfortable

Invisalign clear aligners utilize the flexible SmarkTrack material, which is customized to your smile. The trays are comfortable to wear since there are no brackets or wires. When switching trays, you will notice some pressure as your teeth start to shift. However, it will only last for one to two days. Your Invisalign trays will require replacement as directed by Dr. Jared Lee throughout treatment – typically every 1-2 weeks.

Invisalign: Fact or Fiction

Fiction: It’s hard to maintain Invisalign aligners

Two common thoughts accompanying orthodontic treatment are difficulty brushing your teeth and food restrictions. Many rules go along with having metal braces, but that isn’t always the case with Invisalign.

Fact: Invisalign is easy to maintain

Keeping your Invisalign clear aligners clean is easy, especially since they are completely removable. When it’s time to clear your tray, all you need to do is remove and wash them with an approved solution. This process also helps keep them clear and clean of any debris. You may also utilize a special care kit, which allows you to keep your aligners safe and in mint condition. With Invisalign, there are no brackets or wires to work around, so this makes it easier to brush and floss. It also allows you to keep your regular oral hygiene routine and share your smile throughout treatment. When it comes to food, there are no restrictions with Invisalign. So, you’ll never have to worry about something getting stuck in your braces, and you will be able to drink or eat whatever you want.
