Dr. Joseph Mullen
Dr. Joseph Mullen grew up in Granite Bay, California, where he enjoyed playing piano, singing, ballroom dancing, and scouting.
He earned his Eagle Scout award by gathering supplies and funds for a service mission to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, where he joined the Amigos de los Niños healthcare team to deliver hearing aids to children.
Education & Experience
Dr. Mullen attended college at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, during which he served a two-year mission for his church in the Czech Republic. After returning to his studies, he met and married the love of his life, Ana-Lisa Clark.
A week after welcoming their first child into the family, Dr. Mullen graduated summa cum laude with his degree in Business Management and marketing.
Lifelong Learning
After his graduation from orthodontics residency, Dr. Mullen was recruited to stay on as a faculty member in the UCLA Orthodontics department. He loves teaching residents in the clinic and fulfills administrative duties within the section of orthodontics.
As part of his training at UCLA, Dr. Mullen treated patients with craniofacial anomalies, including cleft lip and palate, at the Ronald Reagan Medical Center and loves treating these special children and youth.
Dr. Mullen is a member of the American Association of Orthodontics, the Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontics, and the American Dental Association.
He enjoys participating in the local dental community and keeping up to date on the latest advances in the field of orthodontics through his professional and university affiliations.
Advanced Degrees
After graduating from BYU, Dr. Mullen and his family moved to Los Angeles, CA, to complete his dental education at the UCLA School of Dentistry.
He graduated magna cum laude with his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree and was selected by his faculty to be inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon (OKU) Dental Honors Society.
After completing dental school, Dr. Mullen remained at UCLA to complete his 3-year residency training in orthodontics, where he served as chief resident.
While at UCLA, he also completed a master’s degree in oral biology, where he organized a grant-funded clinical trial of different products to reduce the severity of early cavities in patients treated with braces.
Outside the Office
Dr. Mullen and his wife, Ana-Lisa, have been married for almost ten years and are the proud parents of three (almost 4!) wonderful children — Henry, Daniel, Linnea, and a baby girl due July 2024.
He loves to spend time with them by drawing their favorite cartoon characters, building Legos, playing with blocks, and cuddling on the couch to watch Disney movies. He is actively involved in their school, church, and extra-curricular activities, including volunteering in their classrooms, assistant coaching T-ball, and leading their Cub Scout pack.
Dr. Mullen’s favorite nickname he’s received from his patients is “Mister Rogers,” whom he strives to emulate in his personal and professional life.
